New device tricks eyes into thinking they're looking far away while reading
NCT ID NCT06995911
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a device that makes reading feel like looking at something far away, to prevent myopia in children aged 6-12 who are at risk. Eighty kids will use the device for at least an hour daily during homework, and researchers will compare their eye changes to a group doing normal reading. The goal is to see if the device can reduce the chance of becoming nearsighted.

What this could lead to
If it works, this device could offer a simple, drug-free way to prevent or slow myopia in children by making reading feel like looking far away.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 children. The device may not prevent myopia, could cause eye strain, or children may not use it as directed.
