Zap to breathe: new device aims to free patients from ventilators

NCT ID NCT05759013

Summary

This study is testing whether a device that gently stimulates stomach muscles can help critically ill adults breathe on their own and get off ventilator machines sooner. The device, called VentFree, uses mild electrical pulses timed with a patient's exhale to strengthen breathing muscles weakened by being on a ventilator. Researchers will compare the device to a fake (sham) treatment in about 272 patients to see if it safely reduces the time people need ventilator support.
