Breathing machine trial aims to shield kids from sickle Cell's worst lung attack

NCT ID NCT01501643

Summary

This study tested if a gentle breathing machine (non-invasive ventilation) could better prevent a dangerous lung problem called acute chest syndrome in children hospitalized for sickle cell pain crises. It compared the machine to the standard treatment of deep-breathing exercises with a small device. The goal was to see if the machine, which requires less effort from the child, could prevent the complication and also help with pain and sleep.
