New cocktail aims to tame dangerous leukemia in High-Risk patients

NCT ID NCT07187505

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding venetoclax to the standard two-drug regimen (ATRA and arsenic trioxide) can help patients with a rare blood cancer called acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) who have very high white blood cell counts. These patients often face serious complications and higher early death rates. The trial will enroll 28 newly diagnosed adults and teens to see if the combination is safe and reduces early deaths.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Venetoclax (a drug that helps leukemia cells die), all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and arsenic trioxide (ATO)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could improve survival and reduce early complications for APL patients with very high white blood cell counts, a group that currently has poor outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 28 participants and no control group, so results may not apply broadly. Adding venetoclax could also increase side effects like low blood counts or infections.
