New vaccine targets group a strep in first human test

NCT ID NCT07616934

First seen Jun 01, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This early-stage trial is testing a new vaccine called VAX-A1 in 80 healthy adults aged 18 to 40. The goal is to see if the vaccine is safe and triggers an immune response against Group A Streptococcus bacteria, which cause strep throat and more severe illnesses. Participants will receive either a low, mid, or high dose of the vaccine or a placebo, and be monitored for side effects and antibody levels over six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

VAX-A1 vaccine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a vaccine that prevents Group A Strep infections, which can cause sore throats, scarlet fever, and serious complications like rheumatic fever.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 80 healthy adults. It is primarily testing safety and immune response, not whether the vaccine actually prevents infection. Many vaccines fail in early testing.
