New hope to fight hidden virus in weakened immune systems

Summary

This study is testing if a drug called valganciclovir can safely lower the amount of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the blood of people with advanced HIV. It will involve about 130 hospitalized adults and teens with very weak immune systems and a CMV infection. Participants will be randomly assigned to take either the real drug or a placebo pill for four weeks to see which one works better.
