Shocking discovery: nerve zap may cut stomach tube time after surgery
NCT ID NCT06648759
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study tests whether a vagal nerve stimulator can reduce how long patients need a nasogastric (NG) tube after abdominal surgery. After surgery, many patients develop a temporary bowel slowdown called ileus, often requiring an NG tube to relieve pressure, which can cause pain and bleeding. The study will enroll 60 adults undergoing major abdominal surgery at UPMC Shadyside who need an NG tube, and compare the duration of tube use between those who receive the stimulator and those who do not.
