New anemia pill could boost energy in dialysis patients
NCT ID NCT07537816
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a pill called vadadustat to standard anemia treatment helps people on dialysis feel better and have higher hemoglobin levels. Forty adults on peritoneal dialysis will receive either vadadustat plus their usual shot or just the shot alone for 8 weeks, then switch. Researchers will track blood counts, quality of life, and inflammation to see if the combination works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Vadadustat (a pill for anemia)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a better way to manage anemia in dialysis patients, potentially improving their energy and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is added to existing therapy, so any benefit may be modest.
