NCT ID NCT05463406
First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study tested a new approach in Swiss emergency rooms to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use for lower respiratory tract infections. Doctors used a clinical score, a lung ultrasound, and a blood test called procalcitonin to decide whether antibiotics were needed. The goal was to see if this strategy could safely lower antibiotic prescriptions compared to usual care. Over 1,400 adults participated, and the study tracked both antibiotic use and patient safety outcomes.
