Simple urine test may predict kidney transplant failure months early

NCT ID NCT07176806

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a protein called Dickkopf 3 (DKK3) in urine can detect kidney transplant problems sooner than standard blood tests. Researchers will collect urine samples from 258 kidney transplant recipients over 12 months and compare DKK3 levels with usual measures like creatinine. If the protein proves reliable, it could lead to earlier treatment and better transplant survival.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a simple urine test to catch kidney transplant problems earlier, helping doctors intervene sooner and potentially prolong graft life.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The test may not prove more useful than current methods, and results may vary across patients.
