Ultrasound may make IV sticks easier and less painful for emergency patients

NCT ID NCT07013994

First seen Apr 15, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tested whether using ultrasound to guide needle placement helps emergency department patients with hard-to-find veins. 200 adults and children with difficult venous access were randomly assigned to receive either ultrasound-guided or traditional (touch-and-look) IV or artery punctures. Researchers measured how many attempts and professionals were needed, the time taken, and the pain experienced. The goal is to see if ultrasound makes these procedures faster, easier, and less painful.
