Ultrasound battle: which vein is best for central lines?

NCT ID NCT03162757

First seen Nov 21, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tested two methods for inserting a central venous catheter (a large IV in the neck or chest) using real-time ultrasound. 210 adults who needed this catheter were randomly assigned to get it in either the lower jugular vein or the subclavian vein. The goal was to see how often each method succeeded and to gather information for designing a larger, more definitive study.
