Ultrasound could spot swallowing trouble before ICU patients wake up

NCT ID NCT05922085

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether ultrasound can help find swallowing problems early in ICU patients who are on a breathing machine. Swallowing issues are common after the breathing tube is removed and can lead to lung infections or longer hospital stays. Researchers will use ultrasound at the bedside to check swallowing muscles, then compare results with a standard camera test. The goal is to see if ultrasound can reliably predict who will have trouble swallowing, so doctors can act sooner.
