Could a simple ultrasound replace scopes for stuck food?
NCT ID NCT06507670
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether a bedside ultrasound can quickly detect food or objects stuck in the esophagus. Researchers will scan 30 adults with symptoms and compare them to healthy volunteers. If ultrasound works well, it might help doctors decide faster whether a scope procedure is needed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
point-of-care ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make diagnosing esophageal blockages faster and less invasive, potentially reducing the need for emergency scoping.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Ultrasound may not reliably detect all blockages, and standard care still applies.
