Nose job debate: extra turbinate procedure may boost breathing

NCT ID NCT07481045

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether performing a minor procedure on the nasal turbinates during a nose job (septorhinoplasty) helps patients breathe better. Eighty adults with a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates were randomly assigned to receive either the standard nose job alone or with turbinate reduction. Researchers measured breathing improvements using patient questionnaires and airflow tests over six months. The results aim to settle whether the extra step is worth it.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Inferior turbinate reduction (submucosal radiofrequency ablation with lateralization) performed during septorhinoplasty

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that adding turbinate surgery to septorhinoplasty provides better nasal breathing relief than septorhinoplasty alone.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with 80 patients. The benefit may be modest or not apply to all patients. Risks include bleeding, infection, or worsened nasal function.
