First seen Feb 15, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tests whether providing housing support to recently incarcerated people and their families, along with mental wellness training for community members, can reduce gun violence in New Haven's highest-risk neighborhoods. Researchers will track neighborhood-level gun violence rates and social cohesion over time. All residents in these areas are eligible for outcome assessment, with specific criteria for those receiving housing assistance.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a proven community-based strategy to reduce gun violence by addressing housing instability and mental health needs.
What could go wrong
This is a large observational and behavioral study, not a controlled drug trial. Results depend on community participation and may not generalize to other cities.
