Breathing valve tested to boost walking stamina in hospital patients

NCT ID NCT04941456

Summary

This study tested if using a Passy-Muir valve, a small one-way device placed on a tracheostomy (breathing tube), helps patients walk farther during physical therapy. Researchers compared how far 26 hospitalized patients could walk in six minutes with the valve versus with an open breathing tube. The goal was to see if the valve improves exercise endurance by helping patients better control their breathing and trunk stability.
