Chill out: cooling spray tested for nexplanon pain
NCT ID NCT06933381
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a cooling spray (vapocoolant) can reduce the pain of the numbing injection given before placing a Nexplanon birth control implant. About 70 people will be randomly assigned to receive either the cooling spray or a placebo spray before the lidocaine injection. Participants will rate their pain on a scale, and researchers will also ask about satisfaction with pain control.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
vapocoolant spray (Pain Ease)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to reduce pain during birth control implant insertion.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (70 people) testing a temporary effect. The spray may not meaningfully reduce pain compared to placebo, and results may not apply to other procedures.
