Could a Cholesterol-Lowering cream replace surgery for eyelid bumps?

NCT ID NCT07662785

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a cream containing simvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering drug) can safely shrink yellow cholesterol deposits on the eyelids, called xanthelasma. Thirty adults will apply either the active cream or a placebo nightly for 24 weeks, then everyone gets the active cream for another 24 weeks. The goal is to see if this non-invasive option works without the scarring or recurrence risks of current treatments.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Topical simvastatin 2% cream

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-invasive, scar-free treatment for xanthelasma, replacing surgery or lasers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase pilot study with only 30 participants. The cream may not shrink the deposits, or could cause irritation. Results may not apply to everyone.
