Whitening showdown: 5% peroxide toothpaste takes on regular paste in One-Week trial

NCT ID NCT06957249

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This completed Phase 3 trial tested whether a Colgate toothpaste with 5% hydrogen peroxide and fluoride whitens teeth better than a toothpaste without hydrogen peroxide. Eighty adults brushed with one of the two toothpastes for one week. Researchers measured tooth color changes using a standard shade guide. The goal was to see if the peroxide toothpaste provides a noticeable whitening boost.

Active substance

5% hydrogen peroxide toothpaste

What this could lead to

If it works, this could confirm that a 5% hydrogen peroxide toothpaste whitens teeth more effectively than a non-whitening toothpaste.

What could go wrong

This is a short, small trial (80 people, one week) focused only on tooth shade, not long-term safety or durability. Results may not apply to everyone.
