Whitening gels put to the test: do they weaken teeth?

NCT ID NCT07165366

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study looked at whether two common tooth-whitening methods—an at-home gel and an in-office treatment—change the hardness of tooth enamel. Forty people who needed to have four premolars removed for braces took part. Researchers flattened a tiny spot on each tooth, then applied the whiteners and later measured enamel hardness in the lab. The goal was to see if either method made enamel softer.
