Fasting diet shows promise for fatty liver disease

NCT ID NCT07530809

First seen Apr 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tests whether a 5:2 intermittent fasting diet (eating only about 600 calories on two days per week) can reduce liver fat in people with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). 120 adults with obesity and high liver fat will be randomly assigned to either the fasting plan or a standard healthy diet. The main goal is to see if the fasting group has a meaningful drop in liver fat measured by ultrasound.
