Thumb arthritis surgery showdown: which procedure offers better relief?

NCT ID NCT03858946

First seen May 06, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compared two common surgeries for severe thumb osteoarthritis: the Weilby procedure (which rebuilds ligaments) and simple trapeziectomy (removing a small bone). Sixty adults who did not get relief from non-surgical treatments were randomly assigned to one surgery. Researchers measured pain, hand function, and movement over time to see if one method was better. The goal was to find which surgery provides better symptom relief and function.
