Chest fluid test may help doctors decide when to take patients off ventilators

NCT ID NCT06685406

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looked at whether measuring the amount of fluid in the chest (called thoracic fluid content) can help doctors know when it's safe to take a patient off a breathing machine. The researchers studied 120 critically ill adults who had been on a ventilator for more than 48 hours. They used a non-invasive device to measure chest fluid and compared it to other tests like ultrasound to see if it could predict successful breathing tube removal.
