New ultrasound measure may better predict Baby's age

NCT ID NCT07169929

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether measuring a specific part of the fetal brain (the thalamus) using 2D ultrasound can reliably estimate how far along a pregnancy is. Researchers measured the thalamus in 110 pregnant women between 18 and 36 weeks. The goal was to see if this measurement matches known formulas for gestational age and could serve as a new growth parameter.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a new, simple ultrasound measurement to help estimate fetal age and growth.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study, not a treatment trial. The measurement may not be more accurate than existing methods and depends heavily on the operator's skill.
