Could a gentle electric current ease pain after knee surgery?
NCT ID NCT07155837
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether TENS (a device that sends low-voltage electrical currents through the skin) can reduce pain and improve early recovery in people who just had a total knee replacement. Forty-four adults will be randomly assigned to receive either TENS twice in the first 24 hours after surgery or standard care alone. Researchers will measure pain intensity, how much pain affects daily activities like moving and sleeping, and patient satisfaction with pain treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- TENS device (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to manage pain right after knee replacement surgery, helping patients move, cough, and sleep better.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 44 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and TENS may not provide meaningful pain relief for all patients.
