Zapping away needle pain: new study tests acupoint device for kids

NCT ID NCT05296187

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a device that delivers mild electrical pulses to acupoints (TEAS) can prevent pain from propofol injections in children. Sixty kids aged 6-13 having elective surgery received either TEAS or a sham treatment before their injection. Researchers measured pain using a behavioral scale. The goal is to find a non-drug way to ease needle pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) device

What this could lead to

If effective, TEAS could offer a simple, drug-free way to reduce injection pain for children receiving propofol.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to all children or settings, and the pain scale is subjective.
