New pain block may cut opioid use after hernia surgery
NCT ID NCT05177991
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a longer-lasting pain blocker (Exparel) works better than the standard one (Marcaine) for pain control after hernia repair. About 200 adults having minimally invasive hernia surgery will receive one of the two drugs via a nerve block before surgery. Researchers will track pain scores and how many opioid pills patients need afterward.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Liposomal Bupivacaine (Exparel) and Bupivacaine (Marcaine)
What this could lead to
If Exparel works better, patients could have less pain and need fewer opioid pills after hernia surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small trial, so results may not be conclusive or apply to all hernia patients. Both drugs are already used, so no major breakthrough is expected.
