New malaria cocktail aims to knock out relapsing p. vivax

NCT ID NCT07533136

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether combining tafenoquine with different antimalarial drugs can better prevent P. vivax malaria from coming back. About 300 adults in Thailand with uncomplicated P. vivax infection will receive one of three drug pairs and be monitored for 6 months. The goal is to find a more effective radical cure that reduces relapse rates.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tafenoquine (with chloroquine, dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, or artemether-lumefantrine)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could identify a more effective drug combination to prevent P. vivax malaria from coming back after treatment.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 300 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The study has not yet started recruiting, and the drugs may cause side effects or fail to prevent relapse.
