Stitches vs mesh: which is better for hernia repair?
NCT ID NCT05599750
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two surgical methods for fixing incisional hernias (2-6 cm wide): using stitches alone or using mesh. The goal is to see if stitches work just as well as mesh for quality of life one year after surgery. About 154 adults who have had a prior hernia repair without mesh will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Incisional hernia repair (surgery)
- What this could lead to
- If suture repair works as well as mesh, patients could avoid the risks and costs of mesh implants while still getting good results.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (154 people) comparing two surgical techniques. Results may not apply to larger hernias or emergency cases, and suture repair might not hold up as well over time.
