Chest tube showdown: suction vs water seal – which works better?

NCT ID NCT07551791

First seen Apr 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 12, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study looks at two common ways to manage chest tubes in people with blood or air in the chest after a traumatic injury. One method uses suction to pull out fluid and air, while the other uses a water seal to let the lung re-expand naturally. Researchers want to see which approach leads to a shorter time with the chest tube and fewer complications. About 150 adults admitted to the trauma service will take part.
