New stent showdown: can covered stents beat bare metal for kidney artery blockages?

NCT ID NCT07566065

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether covered stents are better than bare metal stents for people with narrowed kidney arteries caused by atherosclerosis. About 150 participants will be randomly assigned to one stent type and followed for 12 months to see changes in kidney function and blood pressure. The goal is to find the best way to treat this condition and reduce complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

covered stent (device) and bare metal stent (device)

What this could lead to

If covered stents prove better, this could become the preferred treatment for renal artery stenosis, helping control blood pressure and protect kidney function.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage study with only 150 participants, and results may not apply to all patients. Stent procedures carry risks like vessel damage or restenosis.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

hypertensive disorder renal artery atheroma renal artery disease renal artery obstruction
