First seen Feb 02, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This study tested two methods of placing radioactive iodine seeds alongside a metal stent to open blocked bile ducts in 105 people with incurable cancer. The new spiral-shaped seed strand caused fewer complications like bile leaks and kept the stent open longer (305 vs. 277 days) than the standard straight method. Patients receiving the spiral technique also lived longer on average (345 vs. 300 days). Both approaches improved liver function, but the spiral method was safer and more effective.
