Is back surgery just a powerful placebo? groundbreaking study puts spinal fusion to the test

NCT ID NCT06709391

Summary

This study aims to find out if spinal fusion surgery actually helps people with chronic low back pain, or if the benefits come from the placebo effect of just having surgery. 90 patients with long-term, severe back pain will be randomly assigned during their operation to either receive the real fusion procedure or a placebo surgery where no fusion is performed. Neither the patients nor their doctors will know which treatment they received for six months, to see if the real fusion leads to better pain relief and function.
