New approach aims to soothe sore throats after common neck surgery

Summary

This study is testing whether coating the breathing tube used during surgery with either hydrocortisone ointment or lidocaine solution can reduce throat pain, hoarseness, and coughing after thyroid or parathyroid surgery. It will involve 764 adult patients having elective neck surgery. The goal is to find a simple way to improve patient comfort and recovery in the days following their operation.
