First seen Apr 04, 2026 · Last updated Apr 11, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study is testing if sodium bicarbonate, a common substance used to reduce acidity, can safely and effectively treat dangerous blood acidity in women experiencing obstructed labor during childbirth. Researchers in Uganda will compare three different doses of sodium bicarbonate against a placebo (saltwater) given to 472 women. The main goal is to find the best dose to correct the mother's blood acidity, which can harm both the mother and baby, and to check for any side effects.
