Phone app could spot dangerous jaundice in newborns without needles

NCT ID NCT06963450

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tests a smartphone app called neoSCB that screens newborn babies for jaundice by taking a photo of the white part of the eye. Jaundice affects about 60% of newborns and, if missed, can cause serious brain damage. The app aims to provide a low-cost, accurate way to decide which babies need a blood test, potentially reducing unnecessary hospital visits. Researchers will enroll 405 babies to compare the app's accuracy with standard blood tests and two existing devices.
