Sip 'til you send: study tests if drinking before surgery is safe
NCT ID NCT07656649
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a 'Sip-til-Send' approach, where patients can drink small amounts of clear liquid (about a cup per hour) until called to the operating room. Researchers will use ultrasound to measure stomach volume in 120 adults and compare it to standard fasting. The goal is to see if this more liberal drinking rule changes stomach contents, which could help make fasting more comfortable without increasing rare risks like aspiration.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could support a more patient-friendly fasting guideline that allows drinking small amounts of clear liquid up until surgery, potentially improving comfort and satisfaction.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (120 participants) measuring stomach volume, not actual aspiration risk. The results may not change official guidelines or apply to all patient groups.
