Could one antibiotic dose replace three after jaw surgery?

NCT ID NCT05852158

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares a single dose of the antibiotic cefazolin given before jaw surgery to the standard approach of one dose before plus three doses after surgery. The goal is to see if the single dose works just as well to prevent surgical site infections, which occur in 10-15% of cases. About 400 people having jaw surgery will take part, and they will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups. The results could help reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and lower the risk of antibiotic resistance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cefazolin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a single dose of antibiotics is enough to prevent infections after jaw surgery, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial, and results may not apply to all hospitals. The study is not large enough to detect rare side effects, and there is a chance that fewer antibiotics could lead to more infections.
