Can a simple 'Sigh' save lungs after major heart surgery?

NCT ID NCT07024420

Summary

This study is testing if adding programmed deep breaths, called 'sighs,' to the standard breathing machine settings can better protect patients' lungs after heart surgery. It will compare this 'sigh ventilation' approach to the usual method in about 686 adults having planned heart surgery. The main goal is to see if the new method reduces serious lung problems like pneumonia or the need for prolonged breathing support in the first week after surgery.
