Can a simple sigh save lungs after major surgery?

NCT ID NCT07024420

Summary

This study is testing whether adding programmed deep 'sigh' breaths to standard protective ventilator settings can better prevent serious lung complications in adults after elective heart surgery. Researchers will compare the new sigh strategy to the current standard of care in nearly 700 patients across multiple hospitals. The main goal is to see if this approach reduces problems like pneumonia, fluid buildup, or the need for prolonged breathing support in the first week after surgery.
