Hunt for clues to predict deadly sickle cell crisis in babies
NCT ID NCT01207037
Summary
This study aimed to find early signs that could predict which children with sickle cell disease are most at risk for a life-threatening complication called acute splenic sequestration, where blood gets trapped in the spleen. Researchers followed about 60 infants with sickle cell from age 3-6 months up to 2 years, collecting blood samples and health data during regular check-ups. The goal was to identify specific markers in the blood or genes that signal higher risk, which could help doctors monitor and protect these children earlier.
