Awake brain surgery trial tests simpler approach for walking problems

NCT ID NCT07447479

Summary

This study compares two surgical methods for treating normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain condition that causes walking difficulties, memory problems, and bladder issues in older adults. Researchers will randomly assign 196 patients aged 60+ to receive either traditional brain shunt surgery under general anesthesia or a newer spinal shunt procedure using only local anesthesia. The main goal is to see if the simpler local anesthesia approach works just as well at improving patients' walking ability three months after surgery.
