Doctors test whether newborns need fewer antibiotics
NCT ID NCT05329701
Summary
This study tested whether doctors could safely stop antibiotics early for certain newborn infections, instead of always giving a full 7-day course. It involved 488 full-term newborns across 18 hospitals who had signs of infection but whose initial blood tests came back negative. Researchers compared stopping antibiotics based on the baby's symptoms and a blood marker (CRP) against the standard 7-day treatment, checking if the shorter course was just as safe.
