Could shorter antibiotic courses be safer for preterm babies?
NCT ID NCT07610486
First seen May 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 12, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study looks at whether preterm infants in the NICU who are started on ampicillin for possible early-onset sepsis can safely stop the antibiotic after 24 to 36 hours instead of the usual 48 hours. Researchers will measure ampicillin levels in the blood and monitor the babies for 30 days to check safety and effectiveness. About 60 preterm infants born at 34 weeks or earlier will take part.
