Could a shingles outbreak predict dementia years later?

NCT ID NCT06903078

Summary

This study aims to understand if having shingles (herpes zoster) increases a person's long-term risk of developing vascular dementia, a type of mental decline caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. Researchers will follow 375 adults, some with a new shingles rash and some without, for a year. They will collect blood samples to analyze tiny particles called exosomes, looking for clues that might link the shingles virus to future blood vessel and brain problems.
