Can a simple leg wrap help ICU patients with swelling?

NCT ID NCT07305870

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a sequential compression device (a leg wrap that inflates and deflates) can reduce peripheral edema (leg swelling) and improve heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing in critically ill patients. Researchers will measure leg swelling and vital signs before and after 2-hour daily sessions for 5 days. The trial enrolls 56 stable adults in intensive care who have at least mild leg swelling.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sequential compression device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple, non-drug way to reduce leg swelling and improve vital signs in critically ill patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 56 participants, so results may not apply to all ICU patients. The device may not significantly improve outcomes.
