Smartwatch oxygen sensor put to the test in Low-Oxygen conditions

NCT ID NCT04380389

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested how accurately the Withings ScanWatch measures blood oxygen levels during very low oxygen conditions. Fourteen healthy adults had their oxygen levels briefly lowered while the watch's readings were compared to a standard blood test. The goal was to see if the watch meets official accuracy standards for pulse oximeters.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could confirm that the ScanWatch reliably measures blood oxygen levels, potentially helping people monitor respiratory conditions at home.

What could go wrong

This was a very small study (14 people) in healthy volunteers, not patients. Real-world performance may differ, and the device is not a substitute for medical-grade monitoring.
