Saline or drugs? new study tests simpler treatment for lung infections
NCT ID NCT05903417
First seen Feb 26, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 12 times
Summary
This study compared two treatments for pleural infection (infected fluid around the lungs): washing the chest cavity with salt water (saline) versus using clot-busting drugs (tPA and DNase). 40 adults with poor drainage after chest tube insertion were enrolled. The goal was to see which approach is safer and more effective at clearing infection and avoiding surgery. Results may lead to simpler, less costly care.
