Could magnetic pulses ease FND movement problems?

NCT ID NCT07527403

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a non-invasive brain stimulation technique called theta-burst rTMS can help people with motor functional neurological disorder (FND), a condition causing movement problems without a clear brain lesion. Twenty-two adults with FND will receive 40 sessions of stimulation over 10 days. Researchers will measure changes in patients' own impression of improvement, as well as clinician ratings, quality of life, and mood.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
theta-burst repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment to ease motor symptoms in functional neurological disorder.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase trial with only 22 participants and no control group, so results may not be conclusive or generalizable. The treatment is experimental and side effects are still being identified.
